BIM Sustains a Green Silk Road in the New Era

The project is located in Guazhou County, Jiuquan City (Dunhuang City), Gansu Province, the west of the Hexi Corridor in China, a vital Road route and a significant component of Xining-Korla Highway of the China Western Passage. The main line spanning 46 km² and the side road 29 km². The gross investment amounts to CNY 2.7 billion (approximately 0.42 billion USD) and the annual traffic reaches 25,902pcu / d.

The project will pass through lots of natural reserves and cultural relics, with complex crossing high-voltage lines. Thus, high-level line selection and construction abilities are required. The application of BIM technology in designing the expressway has helped the project win the BIM Engineering Innovation Award of the China Highway and Transportation Society in 2019.

Key Insights

i. BIM Collaborative Design

In this project, an entire BIM collaborative approach was adopted to establish a central model file and corresponding models of different specialties, which will then be gathered with the central file repository and integrated together.

ii. Benefits of the BIM Project

This project harbors the characteristics of large volume, lean management, strict requirement and high controlling. With BIM collaborative design, lean models such as LOD300 roads and stairs of BIM standard were built. The design time was greatly shortened, with design errors reduced by 15% and efficiency improved by 30%.

iii. Design Management Based on the Collaborative Design Cloud Platform

Different from regular BIM applications at the project level, this project adopts BIM design cloud platform and integrates manufacturing management and quality evaluation and control system of the enterprise, which has conspicuously facilitated the level and results of BIM design.
