Glodon expert shares experience on applying digital building platform to support urban renewal at online event

The Glodon’s Head of Thought Leadership Dr. Georgios Kapogiannis presented the state of the art in BIM based on Digital Building Platform during “The Backbone of Urban Renewal: BIM and Adaptive Reuse” event on 30th September 2021. The event was organized by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design and supported by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Beijing Urban and Architecture Biennale.

This online panel discussion showcased a series of exemplary architectural projects that implement innovative digital methods to envision the future of historical buildings. Regarding the implementation of technology, the conversation was expanded towards the value of adaptive reuse and preservation, the division of labor in contemporary practice, and the culture of collaborations.

During the discussion, Dr. Kapogiannis emphasized two points: one is BIM, building information modeling, and the other is the hierarchy of human understanding. He said the key point of Glodon is the capacity to provide a wide variety of services by utilizing different technologies besides building information modeling. While discussing BIM, not only the software shall be considered, but also shall we be mindful of the way of thinking.

According to him, people need to be given access to data at the right time for better decisions to be made. A Digital building platform that incorporates BIM empowers stakeholders to change the relationship between upstream and downstream of the industry chain and bring the manufacturing sector and design together.

Besides Dr. Kapogiannis, the panelist consisted of renowned experts in the field, notably from SOM Skidmore, BDP Quadrangle, ERA Architects, Heatherwick Studio and Batlle i Roig. Panel curators and hosts were Mr. Steven Chou, a RIBA Chartered Architect, and Mr. Sunny Li, OAA at the International AIA.  The on-site panel discussion had around 200 participants, while online broadcast reached 1101 simultaneously at peak.
